Dementia Care at NDH Care: Empowering Elderly Independence at Home in Partnership with Dementia Friends

At NDH Care, we believe that those living with dementia deserve to remain in the comfort of their own homes for as long as possible. With our partnership with Dementia Friends in Birmingham and Leicester, we are uniquely equipped to support elderly individuals, enabling them to live independently while maintaining their dignity and quality of life. Our mission is to empower our care staff with the skills and knowledge necessary to make this a reality, helping elderly people with dementia navigate daily routines with confidence.

Understanding Dementia and Its Impact on Daily Life

Dementia affects memory, cognitive functions, and the ability to perform daily tasks. For seniors, this often means struggling with activities they’ve done all their lives, such as preparing meals, personal hygiene, and engaging in social activities. At NDH Care, our focus is on providing compassionate, individualized care that supports elderly people in managing these activities at home, fostering independence and a sense of security.

Our Approach to Dementia Care at NDH Care

  1. Creating Familiar and Safe Spaces: Routine and familiarity are crucial for individuals with dementia. Our care staff prioritize creating environments where elderly individuals feel safe and at ease, minimizing changes and incorporating comforting elements from their past.
  2. Encouraging Daily Independence: By encouraging independence, we help elderly people with dementia retain their confidence. NDH Care staff focus on “assistance as needed,” allowing individuals to perform tasks on their own whenever possible. Simple gestures, like helping someone choose their outfit or prepare a meal, go a long way in boosting self-esteem and independence.
  3. Supporting Social Engagement and Activity: Social interactions are crucial in preventing isolation. Our staff encourages individuals to engage in social activities, whether it’s enjoying time with family, a favorite hobby, or taking a short walk in the garden.
  4. Adapting Daily Routines to Individual Needs: Every person’s journey with dementia is different, which is why NDH Care emphasizes adapting care routines to each individual. From meal preparation to personal hygiene, our care staff learn about each person’s preferences and habits, incorporating them into daily care for continuity and comfort.

Dementia-Friendly Techniques in Partnership with Dementia Friends

Thanks to our collaboration with Dementia Friends, NDH Care staff have access to extensive resources, training, and dementia awareness programs, equipping them with essential skills to support elderly people living with dementia. Here’s how these techniques make a difference:

  1. Memory-Boosting Tools: Simple memory aids like labels, family photos, or familiar scents can help elderly people feel grounded. Our staff use these tools to create a calm and reassuring environment.
  2. Structured Routines: Predictable routines help reduce confusion and anxiety for individuals with dementia. By maintaining a structured day-to-day routine, our care staff can support elderly people in anticipating their activities, enhancing a sense of normalcy.
  3. Sensory Activities for Cognitive Engagement: Gentle sensory activities can reduce restlessness and promote relaxation. Engaging in sensory-stimulating activities such as gardening, listening to music, or painting offers a calming outlet and a way to enjoy familiar pastimes.
  4. Social and Family Connections: Loneliness can accelerate cognitive decline, so NDH Care encourages family involvement and facilitates social connections. Our team helps organize family visits or virtual connections to keep loved ones close, even from a distance.

NDH Care’s Commitment to Dementia Awareness with Dementia Friends

Our partnership with Dementia Friends in Birmingham and Leicester enhances our dementia care approach by equipping our team with critical knowledge, empathy, and training. This collaboration helps us create a supportive community, fostering a sense of purpose and connection for elderly individuals with dementia while empowering our staff to make a meaningful difference.

They looked after my Dad so well

Carers from NDH looked after my dad for a number of years until his death in October last year. He developed a lovely bond with his carers. My dad wasn’t the easiest of the fold, but they brought out the best in him and took their role of advocating for him seriously. As a family, we are deeply grateful for the kind and compassionate care he received.

It’s been really great, carers are coming to see my father, always regular. They are confident to handle my father, as he is suffering from learning difficulties, and the carers are communicating with him really great.
